It's no wonder ants get into so many homes and offices. There are about 10 million billion of these critters in the world, by some estimates, which means that you likely have a few thousand living under the same roof with you.

When you think about it, our homes and offices provide ants with everything they could need and want - food, water, shelter, MTV, inexpensive wine. In fact, if ants could talk they'd probably complain about the wine!

Ants are extremely successful for a number of reasons. One reason is their quick food finding ability - whether the food is in your home, or, preferably, in your picnic basket. The colony sends out hundreds or thousands of scouts daily to find new food and water sources. Once they find what they're after, they lay a scent trail back to the colony and quicker than you can say, "Chow time!" a big gang of them is swarming over your food like paparazzi on Madonna.

Do ants transmit diseases? Yes, but in general they carry fewer than rats, mice, flies, cockroaches or paparazzi. Ants often carry the bacteria that causes food poisoning, plus a wide variety of other germs. They pick up these germs because of their omnivorous food habits - they can scavenge off a wide variety of items, including dead animals.
